Class: 6th to 8th, Lesson 2.4 : FORMULA USAGE IN SPREADSHEET

Purpose: Students should learn the special features of spreadsheets.

No. of Classes

Depending upon the class strength and number of computers (Two classes for 20 students with five computers).

Material Required

Open office(Spreadsheet).

Prior knowledge

Students should know about Spreadsheets.

Create a new spreadsheet and name it as ‘student mark sheet.ods’. Use formulae to calculate Total, Average and Result.


Teacher's Instruction
  1. Teachers should ensure that the Students understand simple operations like Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division, before giving the Exercise.
  2. Teachers should clarify the difference between text document tables and spreadsheets.
  3. Students should identify the number of rows and columns before creating the spreadsheet.
  4. Teachers should explain about the autofill feature (drag the autofill handle at the bottom right of a cell) and how this is useful in filling dates, days, or S.No).
  5. Teachers should explain that the numbers indicate rows and alphabets indicate columns in Spreadsheet.
  6. Teachers should ensure that all Students understand the freezing rows and columns feature, and also how to highlight the header row by using shadows for that row.
  7. To know the formula of a specific cell, the formula bar at the top left of the sheet can be referred to.
